07/16/2024: HAFSv2 Operational Implementation

HAFSv2 (including both HFSA and HFSB configurations) was implemented into NOAA/NWS/NCEP operations starting with the 12Z forecast cycle today (07/16/2024). Details about the HAFSv2 implementation can be found in this link. And the corresponding NWS Service Change Notice can be seen here.

May 28-30, 2024: HFIP NCAS-M HAFS Summer Colloquium

The HFIP NCAS-M HAFS Summer Colloquium was hosted during May 28-30, 2024, at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) in College Park, MD. The HAFS colloquium was jointly organized by the NOAA Center for Atmospheric Science and Meteorology (NCAS-M), NOAA's Environmental Modeling Center (EMC), and NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML). This colloquium featured presentations and tutorials by the main HAFS developers.

HAFSv1 (including both HFSA and HFSB configurations) was implemented into NOAA/NWS/NCEP operations starting with the 12Z forecast cycle today (06/27/2023). Details about the HAFSv1 implementation can be found in this link. And the corresponding NWS Service Change Notice can be seen here.

Correspondingly, the current HWRF and HMON systems will continue running operationally for the 2023 hurricane season and are currently scheduled to be decommissioned on or about November 30, 2023. The legacy models will run a maximum of three storms at one time and the output will be delayed on average of 30 minutes compared to HAFS.
